Stefan ZEROMSKI

 

(pseudonym Maurycy Zych, Jozef Katerla), 1864-1925, writer, active in Young Poland period and during Second Republic; organized Polish govt. In Podhale region in 1918 as president of Zakopane Republic; co-founder and first president (1920) of Polish Writers' Labor Union; founder in 1924 of Polish PEN-Club; giant of Polish prose, patriot, social activist and moralist; endowed with great sense of beauty and joy of life; stories and novels express sharp protest against social injustice and the backwardness of the masses: Zmierzch (Twilight, 1895), Zapomnienie (Oblivion,1895); feeling of bond with independence tradition in historical novel Popioly (Ashes, 1904); consciousness of social roots of failure of Polish insurrections reflected in Rozdziobia nas kruki, wrony (Rooks and Ravens Peck at Us, 1895); portrait of youth's coming of political age in autobiographical Syzyfowe prace (Sysyphian Labor, 1897); moral obligation to fight for justice and social progress: Silaczka (The Strongman, 1895), Doktor Piotr (Doctor Peter, 1895), novel Ludzie bezdomni (Homeless People, 1899); harsh assessment of first years of independence in novel Przedwiosnie (Spring, 1924); plays: Roza (The Rose, 1909), Uciekla mi przepioreczka (My Pen Got Away From Me,1924); prose poetry, socially and politically engaged journalism; Dzienniki (Journals, 1953-56) - a masterpiece of psychological self-analysis.
